Replicative experiments\r\nwere performed to reconstruct manufacturing techniques and\r\ntest functional hypotheses. Surficial topography\r\nwas examined using a scanning electron microscope for\r\nthe identification of manufacturing and use traces. Five\r\nkey measurements were devised for evaluating gross morphology\r\nand working surfaces of artifacts. Where applicable,\r\nethnographic analogy was employed as a source for\r\nhypotheses about artifact function. Archaeological context\r\nwas studied to reveal distributional and associational\r\npatterns that might contribute evidence pertaining\r\nto the use of bone artifacts and their temporal development.\r\nEmphasis was placed on comparing data derived from\r\nthe various methods to determine whether the y supported\r\nor refuted one another. Interpretations were formulated\r\non the basis of documented patterns rather than isolated\r\nevents and, whenever possible, from multiple analytical\r\ntechniques.\r\nPart II demonstrates the general applicability of\r\nthese methodological approaches through three case studies selected\r\nto maximize diversity of cultural affiliation, environmental conditions, temporal duration, preservational\r\nfactors, and sample size. The first case\r\nstudy is a large, well-preserved collection from the\r\nMogollon-Pueblo village of Point of Pines in the American\r\nSouthwest. The assemblage is derived from a settlement\r\nof brief duration situated in a prairie environment. The\r\nsecond is a medium-sized collection from Tell Abu Hureyra\r\nin northern Syria with a long sequence from the Mesolithic\r\nthrough Ceramic Neolithic. The third case study\r\nconsists of two small samples from Ulu Leang and Leang\r\nBurung, rock shelters in Indonesia which offer an interesting\r\ncontrast in settlement t ype and environment from\r\nthe two open air sites.\r\n"^^<http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#string> .
