Abstract

Ornithoptera alexandrae Rothschild, 1907, a la réputation d’être le plus grand Papillon diurne (Rhopalocère) du monde. Il flotte autour de lui et de sa survivance dans la nature un parfum de mystère ou, du moins, de doute. Nous sommes partis à sa recherche près de Popondetta, seule région de vol connue, en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. Nous souhaitons, à travers cette brève communication, rapporter le point de vue des habitants du village de Daveki, sur le plateau de Managalas, sur les facteurs contribuant à la raréfaction de ce Papillon, et présenter l’initiative de Conwell NukaRa, natif de ce village, qui s’efforce de favoriser son maintien à l’état sauvage. // Ornitoptera alexandrae Rothschild, 1907, is believed to be the largest butterfly (Rhopalocera) in the World. However, this species remains something of a mystery. We went to look for it in its natural habitat near Popondetta, Papua New Guinea. In this paper, we report the reasons for its rarity according to the inhabitants of Daveki, a village on the plateau of Managalas. We also discuss the project initiated by a native from this village, Mr. Conwell NukaRa, aiming at the conservation of this species in nature.
