| Additional information: | This paper reviews how scholars working internationally on gender and education and young people’s sexuality engage with the concept of agency. It is original in that it engages with both Bourdieuian and Butlerian informed analyses using the concept of agency. We conclude that these theoretical frameworks limit the extent to which we can theorise how agentic practice might become sustained. This leads to the identification of a ‘third way’ to theorize agency and, using the study’s in-depth qualitative data, to two quite different understandings of power articulated by the young women. These conceptualisations open up the space for tracing how participants demonstrated ‘agency in action’, and point to how it may be possible to identify more sustained forms of agentic practice. The significance of this work lies in is contribution to the debate currently underway across a number of disciplines internationally about how young women today are constrained but also able to challenge dominant power relations. |
