| Additional information: | This paper uses data from the 1958 and 1970 cohort studies to illustrate the key changes in family structure which have occurred in recent decades. Although many of the identified changes have been documented elsewhere this paper provides new evidence by exploiting the fact that for the first time it is now possible to make a direct comparison between the family and household structures of individuals in their early thirties born twelve years apart. The data on which the analyses in the paper are based have been collected from two large-scale nationally representative samples. All comparisons between the two cohorts have been tested for statistical significance. |
