Abstract
The concept of intercultural understanding as core objective in the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages in England is explored through a review of the literature and through classroom enquiry. Connections are made with children’s understanding of their first culture and their developing sense of a national identity. In the classroom investigations with five to eight year old pupils in London and Paris primary schools, teachers acted as cultural go-betweens to bring the two cultures into relationship. Children were invited to talk about their own sense of identity and to take photographs of their school which they believed would be of interest to children from the other culture. In turn, they discussed and asked questions about the photographs of the other school. The exploratory and interactive approach to developing an awareness of first and foreign culture motivated engagement and curiosity and provided a rationale for learning the other language.
