Abstract

The crisis of our times is that we have science without wisdom. The crucial question is: How can the world learn to become a bit wiser? The answer is that we need our institutions of learning, our schools and universities, to be rationally devoted to the task. At present they are not. Judged from that standpoint, universities – devoted as they are to the pursuit of knowledge – are damagingly irrational in a wholesale, structural fashion. We urgently need to bring about a revolution in academic inquiry so that the basic task becomes to devote reason to helping humanity make progress towards a wiser world.
