Abstract
Chapter discusses life-writing in Latin, French, and English from High Medieval England (10th-13th centuries). The different expectations of medieval life-writing are illuminated by comparing it heuristically to modern life-drawing rather than to portraiture, a common analogue for modern biography. Sections discuss lives of Edward the Confessor, Tristan and Isolt, William Marshal and William the Conqueror, the last as told by William of Malmesbury in the Gesta regum Anglorum. A focus on women's participation in life-writing runs throughout.
