Abstract
The incidence and severity of human diseases vary between sexes: it is widely recognised that autoimmune diseases are generally more common in females than in males and are most marked in women with childbearing potential. This suggests that the susceptibility to autoimmune diseases is expressed at the time of puberty. Puberty is a period of intense molecular, cellular, metabolic and hormonal changes that support the significant growth spur and the anatomical and physiological body adjustments that characterise puberty. It was previously hypothesised that the changes occurring at the time of puberty lay the framework for gender differences that persist throughout life and may contribute to the variable onset and progression of various disease in men versus females.
