Abstract
This chapter introduces the medieval Italian poet Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch) and the sixteenth-century European literary movement known as Petrarchism. I argue that Petrarch is an important figure in world literature because of the “multiple belongings” of his nomadic life (Braidotti 2011) and the openness of his poetry to multiple interpretations. Both these aspects are read under the sign of ambiguity. I also suggest that ambivalence serves to further Petrarch’s popularity, using the example of the French poet Joachim du Bellay. The conclusion acknowledges the limitations of the idea of Rome/Europe as the world, and suggests avenues for future research.
