Abstract
This article examines the manuscripts of the novels Esau and Jacob (1904) and Ayres Memorial (1908) by Machado de Assis. The two genetic files are composed, respectively, by 834 and 484 folios and are in the Brazilian Academy of Letters, in Rio de Janeiro. Based on the typology of genetic documentation established by De Biasi (1996), I establish the type of genetic document they constitute. Both genetic dossiers challenge the traditional extrapolation of textual trajectories represented by a particular genetic dossier, that is, a chronological chain of documents ranging from initial work plans to concrete text. Starting from data obtained from the codicological analysis of the two documents, the contracts and the passive and active correspondence of the author, I will show that: 1) the production of a "clean copy" for the composition of the first edition of the novels served to writer as a retextualization tool, taking him back to the stage of composition, which generated several scriptural and material transformations in the folios; and 2) that both documents served as the basis for the typographic composition of the first edition of the respective novels. Various stages, phases, operational functions, and folio types are present in each document. They witness the work of manuscript preparation and retextualizationbon à tirer and the production process of the first editions, which officially begins when the editor contracts the works by contract and sends the manuscripts to Paris.
