Abstract
The installation space contains a field of nine intelligent fiber optics constructed from cast perspex, Aluminium and stone. Each fiber can emit and control the direction of its light-beam using a motorized mirror and measure the light-levels in different directions around it. An electronic sensing, control and networking system is embedded in each fiber to animate their behavior in real-time. The behavior of the field when it senses visitors is to follow them through the field as they change the light levels between objects, if you stand still in one location the field adapts by regarding you as “part of the environment”. The behavior of each fiber in the field is under the control of a “Genetic Algorithm” searching computer program that animates the field to collectively explore its environment with light emission, directing and sensing. The pace and nature of the field’s behavior is adaptive to changes in the ambient light and occupancy of the installation space. The field’s operating system software compares found (real-time sensed) and familiar (memory) light-levels from over 100 sensors to adapt the field’s behavior.
