Abstract
Despite a greater emphasis on the quality of the taught provision in HE; the nature of the student experience and in Engineering Education, the need to develop innovative curricula, preparing future Engineering Educators for their role is often overlooked. Where attention exists, it often focuses on individual activities such as reflection and portfolio building (Gast, Schildkamp and van der Veen, 2017). In contrast, collaborative approaches have long been recognized as being effective by providing the richest opportunities for teacher professional development (see for example, Broad, 2015; Goodson and Hargreaves, 1996). In light of this, this paper focusses on the ways in which future Engineering Educators can develop pedagogic and curriculum expertise through enquiry and practice. An on-going collaborative Institute of Education/UCL ‘seed corn’ funded project, which investigates undergraduate learning through Project Based Learning (PjBL), enabled an alternate approach to the professional development of future Engineering Educators to be explored. This paper will examine the experiences and learning of engineering Post Graduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs) who acted as research assistants on the project. The PGTAs carried out research observations of project-based learning scenarios and in situ interviews with engineering undergraduates. This offered the PGTAs an additional dimension through which to understand student learning and their own role of supporting engineering students. The paper will identify and discuss the wider learning opportunities afforded through participation in the project and the implications for the future development of HE practitioners
