Abstract
Jos Boys discusses how assumptions about care are mobilised within architectural education in the UK, and particularly how these are refracted through the concept of place-making. Boys offers a constructive criticism of a widely used textbook, which outlines a phenomenological approach to inspire caring sensibilities among professionals through stressing the emotional, sensory and material qualities of place. Boys argues that the book advances a series of unsustainable ideas, among them the assumption about the universality of certain built forms and experiences, which overlooks bodily diversity and difference as well as the fact that built environments can often be profoundly disabling. Boys therefore draws on contemporary social theory and critical design to develop alternative ways of understanding care in architectural education, ones that direct attention to the potential exclusions of design as well as invite professionals to actively recognise and creatively disrupt normalising tendencies in current practices.
