Abstract
This chapter outlines the understanding of trauma and its development from the mentalizing perspective. We highlight the effects of trauma in the development of mentalizing and the ensuing damage to the development of epistemic trust, which hampers the understating of the social world, with long-lasting consequences. We posit that certain characteristics of totalitarian regimes impede the working-though of trauma by forbidding social exchange. We also speculate about the transmission of attachment, mentalization and epistemic trust from parents to children within a climate of political violence. Lastly we outline the mutative factors for mentalizing and epistemic trust in psychotherapy, in particular the early stages of mentalization therapy, were social referencing of traumatic memories is one of the major goals.
