Abstract

This entry discusses home‐based child care, or childminding as it is commonly known in the United Kingdom. It explores the role of home‐based settings in offering quality care and education to support young children's learning and development during the preschool years. It presents an overview of the international literature and synthesizes the key issues and debates relating to this type of child care service. With reference to existing studies, the discussion reviews the nature of the provision across different countries and offers a conceptual framework to better understand this model of early care and education. It argues that home‐based child care is a vital service not only as a form of family support, particularly for vulnerable families, but also as an important pedagogical model in enhancing children's development that is distinct from any other type of provision.
