Abstract
This article explores the links between social exclusion and health with particular emphasis on the ways in which transport influences the relationship. The nature of social exclusion is discussed, particularly its multi-dimensional nature and the various ways in which it is interpreted. Then the interactions with health are examined, both overall and for some groups in society. The links between social exclusion and transport are considered in terms of the ways that some socially excluded people have limitations on their ability to travel and the barriers that they face. The themes are brought together by consider three key ways in which transport influences the relationship between social exclusion and health: through providing access to facilities that offer health care and opportunities to follow a healthy lifestyle, through active travel that offers health enhancing physical activity, and through externalities that may have adverse effects on health that affect excluded people disproportionately.
