Abstract
OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this project are to develop and pilot test a survey on fire safety and to develop methods for its administration. A procedural manual will be constructed to describe these methods. The survey on smoke alarm ownership and maintenance and on fire safety awareness is to be conducted as part of a randomised controlled trial evaluating a smoke alarm give-away programme carried out in the London boroughs of Camden and Islington in 1997. It is intended to measure the intermediate outcomes for the programme.
