Abstract

In the decade or so before the 2016 Referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union (EU), there had been a rapid increase in foreign faculty in UK higher education institutions (HEIs), particularly those from other EU countries. Many institutions had come to rely on academics from other EU countries, and those from outside the EU, for a significant part of their research, teaching and other activities. After the Referendum vote which determined that the UK should leave the Union, fears grew that there would be an exodus of foreign academics, and especially those from the EU, as Britain appeared to signal an isolationist and anti-immigrant turn in public opinion and government policy. This chapter will focus on the profile of foreign faculty in the UK, their characteristics and current situation, their influence on their institutions and HE as a whole and the issues facing them. ‘Brexit’ will be considered as a possible disruption to the internationalisation of UK academia.
