Abstract

Today, the term ‘Anglo-Saxon’ is used in a number of ways – to label economic, legal and political positions, describe ethnic and cultural origins, or to characterize particular attitudes and values. But was early medieval ‘Anglo-Saxon’ society really a homogenous or unified peoples sharing a common world view? This paper explores three of the contemporary ideas commonly conflated with ‘Anglo-Saxon’ identity: masculinity as expressed particularly through martial ability; purity/nobility as a characteristic of Englishness; exceptionalist notions concerning the relationships between Anglo-Saxons and other communities in the British Isles, focusing particularly on the issue of territorial identity. This essay then describes some recent events and urges a revision of the vocabulary of early medieval studies.
