Abstract

The study analysed the executive, emotional, and behavioural problems of 148 girls, who were living in foster homes (Spain). It also sought to determine whether their profile was different from that of 170 young boys in foster care and the extent to which age was linked to those problems. The Assessment System for Children and Adolescents and the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function were used for data collection. Statistical analyses included both frequentist and Bayesian methods. According to the results obtained, female minors presented more behavioural and executive problems than their male peers, as well as more problems related to depression and anger management. On the other hand, females seemed to have greater self-esteem, which may serve as an important protective factor. However, their tendency to isolate themselves might turn out to be a risk factor. These findings highlight the need to consider the gender dimension when designing and implementing interventions for minors in residential care.
