Abstract

Concentrando-se sobre as duas primeiras seções da Parte IV do primeiro livro do Tratado da natureza humana, propomos neste artigo o estudo da noção de propensão natural à identidade em Hume. Nosso objetivo é apreender os princípios, na imaginação, mediante os quais a mente é levada a conceber a identidade, seja da pessoa seja dos objetos exteriores. Haja vista que, segundo Hume, cada percepção tem uma existência separada e distinguível de todas as outras, é preciso compreender por que prevalece uma tendência a confundir a diferença e a continuidade do mesmo. Para tanto, questionamos o significado do que se apresenta, nas referidas seções do Tratado, como uma naturalidade do pensamento, interpretando-a através da tendência da imaginação a satisfazer-se. Focusing on the first two sections of the Part IV of the first book of the Treatise of Human Nature, we propose in this paper the study of the notion of natural propensity to identity in Hume. Our aim is to seize the principles, in the imagination, through which the mind is induced to conceive identity, whether of the mind or of the external objects. Since, according to Hume, each perception has a separate and distinguishable existence, we explore the reason why it arises a strong tendency to the confusion between the difference and the continuity of the same. To that, we question the meaning of what, in the mentioned sections of the Treatise, presents itself as a natural way of thinking, interpreting it through the tendency of the imagination to satisfy itself
