Patterns of Invention: The Question of Creativity in Generative Design.
Doctoral thesis (Ph.D), UCL (University College London).
Abstract
Despite the burst of interest and expense of resources in recent years, the state of the art on the question of creativity remains split among opposing views that form a fragmented and disconnected discourse. This split has featured prominently in creativity research literature in general and in the discussion on creativity in generative design in particular. Through a combination of methods, including a critical theoretical-philosophical examination into the roots of the concept of creativity in Western thought, and a qualitative empiric research into the works of pioneers of generative design, the thesis provides a comprehensive perspective on creativity in generative design. This perspective situates itself in the mid-range between a specific micro-study and a general macro-research by combining both approaches. The overall aims are to challenge existing theoretical assumptions about the concept of creativity taking the discussion beyond the current fragmented discourse, as well as to shed light on the potential of generative design processes for the development of ideas and insights. It is argued that in the generative design cases examined certain patterns were recognized on the basis of case study analysis and semi-structured interviews. The empiric study focuses on the pattern of contradiction, a pattern that was also discussed in specific works on creativity, such as Altshuller’s (1984) theory of inventive problems and their level of contradictions and Koestler’s (1964) study of paradoxes. The conclusion that some regularities in the processes of change and development of different algorithms by the designers are identifiable, reinforces the argument that creative thinking processes as consciousness processes in duration, have consistencies in which patterns are recognizable.
