Abstract
Given the abundant worldwide resources of natural gas trapped in sedimentary shale rock formations (“shale gas”), development of the shale gas resources presents the potential for significantly boosting the countries’ economies during the transition from fossil-fuel to more sustainable energy source. However, it is critically important that the design and operation of shale gas facilities meet the required safety standards for minimising or eliminating the risks to the environment and society.
