Abstract
Summary. In the United Kingdom, the Department of Health has introduced a remuneration system for pharmacists aimed at controlling national pharmaceutical expenditure, but also aimed at promoting health and enhancing the value of the pharmacist. The new contract provides for a reimbursement for essential services - distribution of drugs - and an accessory remuneration per performance, for the additional supply of advanced and enhanced services at a local level. This system, aimed at bringing out the professionalism of the pharmacist and guaranteeing a quality offer to the consumer, has been supported by the introduction of specific supply schemes of advanced services at a local level, the Local pharmaceutical services (Lps). This work describes the policies implemented to enhance the pharmacist's value and promote health and outlines the peculiar characteristics of the remuneration system introduced for this purpose. The impacts that these policies have had on the initial objectives are presented and discussed. In conclusion, the feasibility and potential effects of such a policy in Italy are evaluated, considering the elements that characterize and distinguish the Italian pharmaceutical system from the English one.
