Abstract

The social experiences of autistic population and their link to other issues (e.g., camouflaging, stigma, identity, mental health,) have been explored separately from different lenses, specifically, in the UK. However, the nature of this impact as a surrounding social sphere influenced by the social expectations has not yet been examined in depth. Additionally, neither has it got any attention in Spain. This thesis applies a sociological prism to investigate these experiences as uniquely lived, their relationship with social expectations, and their meaningful consequences for autistic adults in the UK and in Spain. This thesis provides several important findings for clinical consideration during diagnostic procedures and support provision, especially in Spain, where instruments examining camouflaging experiences, such as the CAT-Q, for example, has not yet been translated. Furthermore, the Covid-19 pandemic presented important life changing situations in both countries, promoting a new and uncertain social organisation. This thesis explores the main areas where the autistic community from both countries needed support during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, whilst revealing a series of areas where the healthcare support failed to account for the needs of the autistic population. This research also reports on the need for embedding the autistic voice into policies, training protocols, and support provision services, whilst advocating for implementing co-production designs and conducting participatory research. Keywords: autism, camouflaging, wellbeing, stigma, mental health, social expectations
