Abstract
How do children engage in collaborative comics making and publishing through an extra-curricular comics club? Drawing on an ongoing doctoral action research project with children aged nine to eleven in a South London Primary School, this research paper will examine how club members worked collaboratively to write, draw and publish their own comics. This paper argues for the pedagogical importance of giving children the space to create their own, self-initiated and collaborative narratives through comics making. Considering the act of writing and drawing a comic strip as a multimodal practice, this paper will examine how children’s literacy engagement can be considered as a world-making process. Underpinned by a Text World Theory framework (Gavins, 2007; Werth, 1999), this paper demonstrates the pedagogical significance of creative collaboration, publishing and sharing comics in the school community in relation to children's identities as authors. The findings demonstrate how comics making can play a critical role in children’s meaning making of the world around them, through a bi-directional relationship between their discourse and text worlds. Finally, the paper offers suggestions for future practice within education and comics pedagogy and invites questions about future research into children’s comics making.
