Abstract

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is the key non-pharmacological intervention for mild to moderate dementia in the UK. Little is known about the feasibility and effects of remote delivery of CST, or its use with people living with rare dementia. This thesis aimed to add to the understanding of the use of cognitive stimulation (CS) in these areas. Part one constitutes a scoping review on the feasibility, effectiveness, and adaptations of CS in people living with rare dementias. The evidence base was limited, with eight studies, of which seven focused on Parkinson’s-related dementias. It speaks to adaptations that have been identified and how these may be considered moving forward. Part two presents a qualitative study on the experience and impact of Virtual individual Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (V-iCST) on adults with mild to moderate dementia in the UK. It uses reflexive thematic analysis to generate key themes relating to the experience, barriers, and facilitators of V-iCST from the perspective of people living with dementia and their carers. This is a joint project alongside Esther Hui, PhD student, who developed V-iCST and conducted a feasibility randomised control trial (RCT) in the UK, focusing on quantitative outcomes. This work relates to the UK RCT, focusing on qualitative outcomes. Part three is a critical appraisal including a reflexive overview of my personal interest in dementia, my identity as a researcher, the methodology and limitations of part two, and touches briefly on challenges faced during part one.
