Abstract
Court Artist (Supreme Court) (2023) Digital C-Type print, 40.5 x 27 cm In this self portrait by Carey Young, the artist positions herself as the female subject - we notice her curves and bare skin - who inscribes herself into the male-dominated world of the US Supreme Court. This photograph shows the line-up of judges, which includes the first woman judge to be appointed to the court. “The image relates my body and identity as an artist, to the judicial portrait as a genre – which has almost always featured men. Created annually, the Supreme Court’s photographic portraits show current serving justices, and feature the red velvet curtain, which itself has become an icon representing courtrooms within the public imagination.” - Carey Young
