Abstract

Pedagogical background: The idea of integrating subjects in the curriculum is not new to the English education system. In recent years, a number of educational publishers have produced books specifically aimed at the development of cross-curricular approaches, especially to support the teaching of the core subjects of Mathematics and English. Focus of the initiative. / The European Music Portfolio-Maths (EMP-M) project, funded by the EU, has supported us to develop a particular focus in London on the integration of music and mathematics. Through the European Music Portfolio-Maths (EMP-M) project we have been able to establish focused sessions on the integrated teaching of music and mathematics in our initial teacher training programmes, as well as in our CPD and Masters programmes. / Approach of the work: Through CPD and work with trainee teachers, we now have evidence of how our ideas have been taken on and developed in the classroom. We have seen that by integrating the teaching of music and mathematics, learning can happen in connected, meaningful and engaging contexts. / Summary of main ideas and findings: Teachers have found the activities engaging and thought-provoking. In addition, they have found the activities and ideas easy to adapt, because of the underpinning principle of creating activities which follow the principle of ‘low threshold, high ceiling’. / Conclusions and implications for music education: While the EMP-M project is still on-going, we are seeing significant benefits for music education. This project has not been concerned with exploring the use of music as a tool to support the learning of mathematics, but rather, our approach has been one in which patterns, sequences and relationships in music and mathematics form the basis of a truly integrated approach.
