Abstract

Chapter one is a conceptual introduction to the types of difficulties family carers often experience with sleep in the context of caring for someone living with dementia. It also outlines the type of sleep interventions researched in the literature for family carers of people living with dementia, including an introduction to the DREAMS START intervention. Chapter two outlines a qualitative study exploring family carers’ experiences of sleep. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the data was analysed through an inductive, Reflexive Thematic Analysis approach. The findings focused around how caring for a person living with dementia impacts the sleep of family carers and the wider family system, the ways family carers found to improve their own sleep experience and demonstrated the systemic impact when sleep improves for the person living with dementia. These findings are discussed in relation to the past literature. Potential implications of this research and suggestions for future areas of study are also outlined. Chapter three is a critical appraisal of the entire research process. It includes my reflections on the conceptual introduction and my decision making behind the format of the paper. The development of the empirical study was also discussed, providing some further explanation as to how I decided to approach the research. It also includes some of my personal reflections on the empirical study, including some of the challenges I experienced and outlines some of my decision making around the research methodology and approach to data analysis.
