Abstract

Megaprojects are complex features with characteristics from both permanent and temporary organisations. The majority of existing literature focus exclusively on one or another stream, contributing to ambiguity and overlapping approaches when designing megaproject organisations. To address this gap, this paper answers the research question “What are the features that should be incorporated in the organisational design of megaprojects to create an integrated rigid-flexible structure?” This research question is answered through a conceptual framework, building upon the organisational design literature, in which we propose five features to integrate a rigid and flexible structure, containing characteristics from both permanent and temporary models. They are as follows: (i) dimensions that influences decisions in the OD, (ii) different degrees of intra- and inter-organisational boundaries, (iii) development and re-design of the organisation, translated in fixed and flexible stage gates (iv) coordination roles distributed in management levels. In addition, another significant contribution of this paper includes the joining of the main and most common definitions to organisational design, as well as provide a list of synonyms of related concepts.
