Abstract

This discussion topic explores the meanings of ‘historiography’, and explains how historiography is most typically understood in history. The relationship between ‘history’ and the ‘past’, central to understanding why historiography changes and develops, is explained, and so are key differences in how the past can be approached, that help to explain the diversity of historiography. The reasons why it is important for history students to understand historiography are explained and demonstrated as are the impacts that variations in historiography can have on historical research and writing. The professionalisation of history is then described and its impacts considered and so are the impacts of different temporal, social, cultural, political, economic, and technical contexts on historiography. Trends in the development of historiography are summarised and the topic finishes by describing some contemporary debates in historiography.
