Abstract

The transition from further to higher education is a much-studied topic, yet while there are a significant number of postgraduate taught (PGT) students in the UK, the transition to PGT study has seen little research. We present an MSci Chemical Education research project conducted in the Chemistry Department at UCL, which aimed to answer the following questions: - What are the biggest factors experienced by students during their transition into PGT education in the Department of Chemistry? - Is there a relationship between student background and their views on those factors? - What improvements in support could be adopted to ease PGT transition? To address these questions, PGT students were surveyed and interviewed. The results were evaluated using statistical and thematic analysis, showing interesting trends in attitudes towards academic achievement versus personal development. In this presentation, we will discuss these results and share recommendations to improve the PGT transition.
