Abstract

Poetry As Research offers opportunities for developing a deeper understanding of commonly encountered experiences – in particular feeling silenced or invisible in the academy. Nine women – research students and academic staff from different disciplinary backgrounds – came together as a collective. The collective's contribution to this edited book focuses on how a dialogic process of writing poetry as learning enables us to make sense of our experiences and to amplify otherwise silenced and marginalised voices. Having used poetry to critically explore the intersectional spaces we occupy in the landscapes of our respective academic practices, we consider the practicalities and possibilities of developing a community of practice of poetic inquirers. We discuss how nurturing such a community of practice offers a sense of safety, and how this umbrella of protection in turn allows for the individual and collective emergence of voice to articulate our identities. Our contribution to the development of poetic inquiry lies in evidencing the empowerment radiating from our collaborative and dialogic poetic inquiry under the umbrella of a community of practice.
