Abstract
This chapter discusses mystery cults in Asia Minor in the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods focusing on the embeddedness of mystery cults in different poleis such as Sardis, Ephesos, Stratonikeia and mysteries of specific deities such as Meter and Demeter. The chapter centres around case studies of poleis with a longer history or higher than average density of evidence for mystery cults such as Ephesus and local mysteries linked to a major sanctuary such as those of Zeus Panamaros in Karia and Apollo Pleurenos near Sardis. A final section is dedicated to mysteries of mother goddesses often borne out of local cults and over time interpreted as trans-local cults, such as that of Kybele, which was celebrated throughout the Greek and Roman world. The chapter aims to draw a general picture of local and regional trends and rituals with a focus on the ‘mystericization’ in the Roman Imperial period.
