Abstract

In the realm of healthcare research, the glaring disparities in health outcomes among individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds have been well-documented (Marmot Citation2020). It is an unfortunate truth that people experiencing socioeconomic deprivation (PESD) often face a higher prevalence and increased severity of long-term conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, dementia and mental health conditions, across the life course compared to those not experiencing deprivation (Katikireddi et al. Citation2017). Furthermore, PESD are frequently underrepresented and less likely to be actively included in research, potentially due to a lack of trust in research institutions stemming from a history of racism and classism to name a few (Mitchell et al. Citation2023), thus perpetuating health inequalities. Other reasons for the lack of inclusion of PESD in research includes inflexible research studies, with restrictive recruitment methods; less time spent with this population in research consultations; and a lack of recruitment in deprived areas and communities (Emery, Silverman, and Carey Citation2023; Popa et al. Citation2023). The need for change is evident, and it is imperative that researchers explore innovative and efficient ways to engage with these underserved populations. This opinion piece offers insights into our journey as researchers, to bridge the divide between PESD and engagement in research and promote qualitative health research that truly encompasses the experiences of PESD.
