Abstract
What connects urban politics and policy to economic development? If the ancient Greek root of economy is oikonomia – the management of the household – then economic development is entwined with human settlements, whose most basic unit, from the village to the megalopolis, is the household. Yet economic development is more than just etymologically rooted in set- tlements; the contemporary capitalist economy is deeply embedded in forms of urbanisation. The dual structure of intensive urban concentration in cities and extensive resource networks reaching far out into rural hinterlands is the branch-and-node circuitry that powers economies. The relation between urban form and economic process is so intimate, in fact, that we might better see them as two dialectical sides of the very same coin.
