Abstract

This chapter overviews the history and legacy of the dispersal of heritage from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt from the disciplinary perspective of archaeology. It begins in the early 19th century with the ‘antiquities rush’, works through the development of colonial fieldwork and museum building, and ends with a consideration of the continuing dispersal of heritage in the present-day illicit trade in cultural property. Discussion is focused not just upon ascertaining provenance and tracking down the current locations of artefacts but also on understanding the networks and agencies in the acquisition of things as well as tensions, conflicts, and resistance to their removal. Throughout, objects and antiquities are not the only concern, as archives, including photographs and other audio-visual media, were produced during colonial fieldwork and are equally part of North Africa's dispersed heritage.
