Abstract
This thesis explores the identity-related experiences of Mixed-Race young people in the United Kingdom (UK) seeking mental health support. It is composed of three chapters: Part one provides a conceptual introduction that illuminates the theoretical framework that underpins the research and reviews existing the literature concerning 1) Concepts relating to race and ethnicity, 2) Outlining the UK history and context, 3) Exploring what is currently known about Mixed-Race identities and mental health, limitations are highlighted to foreground the rationale for the study that follows. Part two is the empirical study, which addresses existing gaps in the literature relating to Mixed-Race young people. It uses a qualitative Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) design to explore how Mixed-Race young people phenomenologically experience their identity and mental health support. This section includes a discussion of the study's implications, limitations and suggestions for further research. Part three is a critical appraisal summarising the author's process and reflections on developing the project, considering the implications of insider positionality, language and terminology and undertaking qualitative research.
