Abstract

This thesis explores the views and experiences of accessing and attending NHS psychological therapies for people living with dementia (PLWD), as well as the views and experiences of psychological therapies more broadly for carers of PLWD. Part 1 presents a systematic review that examines carers of PLWD’s experiences of accessing and attending psychological therapies. Specifically, through thematic synthesis, the review investigates qualitative research studies where carers shared their experiences of accessing and/or attending psychological therapies, including any barriers or facilitators. Findings were based on 23 studies. Themes synthesised included mental health difficulties and relationship struggles (context), overall positive experiences of therapy, common changes experienced (e.g. increased awareness of one’s emotions and needs, increased self-care and self-compassion), specific unhelpful experiences of therapy, suggestions and further needs; and impact of wider societal contexts and events (i.e. the COVID-19 pandemic). Part 2 presents a qualitative study using reflexive thematic analysis to investigate the experiences of PLWD in accessing and attending National Health Service (NHS) psychological therapies, by carrying out semi-structured interviews with PLWD and carers. Key themes developed included barriers and facilitators at individual, clinician, systemic and societal levels, as well as suggestions for the future including early intervention, increasing societal awareness and dementia training for professionals. Part 3 provides a critical appraisal of the research process. This includes challenges and dilemmas faced, as well as reflections on how the researcher’s background, experiences and aspects of identity as well as contexts in which the research was carried out may have influenced the research process.
