Parent Work in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy – Approaches and Practice.
Doctoral thesis (D.Psych), UCL (University College London).
Abstract
Background: It is widely known that parents have an important influence on their children, emotionally and psychologically. When children are in treatment, parents’ relationship with their child and their parenting could contribute to the child’s difficulties. Consequently, it is recommended that child and adolescent psychotherapy treatments include concurrent work with parents, which could improve treatment outcome. Despite this, the empirical literature in this area is at its infancy, and has not yet been collated. This narrative review will attempt to address this gap. Methods and findings: The empirical literature was reviewed and this yielded four studies of concurrent parent work, offered alongside child and adolescent psychotherapy treatments for children over 5 years old. The studies investigated different aspects of concurrent parent work including approaches to practice, aims and outcomes. The wider literature was also searched for expert opinions that explicitly referred or described concurrent parent work. This yielded five further publications. The literature was organised according to themes and critiqued. It was shown that there are different areas of focus within the practice of parent work, and there is some evidence of positive outcomes. Implications for this field of research as well as clinical practice are discussed. Conclusion: Literature in this field was surprisingly scarce and low in the hierarchy of evidence. This is despite the widespread use of this intervention model by child and adolescent psychotherapists in the NHS. It is hoped this review will shine a light on this gap, which will promote future research in the field and inform clinicians and policy makers.
