Abstract

An estimated 48 million people experience suicide bereavement annually (Pitman et al., 2014) and these individuals are at a higher risk of a variety of negative mental health outcomes, including suicide. The negative effects of suicide bereavement on a number of domains associated with an elevated risk of suicide, such as depression, PTSD, grief and poor social support, are well documented. However, these factors alone may be insufficient to account for the elevated risk of suicidality after suicide bereavement compared with other types of violent bereavement. There exists no theoretical model, at present, that attempts to explicate the link between suicide bereavement and subsequent death by suicide. This chapter explores the literature surrounding both phenomena to develop a theoretical model accounting for the links connecting the two. The model attempts to synthesise current understandings of the impact of suicide bereavement with several existing psychological theories of bereavement, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal behaviour. This chapter will describe the relationship between the present model and these existing models; the factors which may cause the suicide bereaved to be a higher-risk group for suicide, even prior to suicide bereavement, and the aspects of the experience of suicide bereavement hypothesised to increase suicide risk.
