Abstract

The ability to attune to children and adolescents in educational settings with openness and understanding requires a reflective approach to and notion of the pedagogical profession that takes into account the professional, their counterpart as well as the relationship between them. The concept of mentalisation can offer crucial aspects to shed light on these areas as, on the one hand, it encourages reflective processes with regards to one’s own stance and, on the other hand, it leads to a deepened understanding of relationships and their management in educational fields. In the following chapter we will introduce the conceptualisations of mentalising and its building blocks. This entails developmental psychology foundations but also theoretical links with neighbouring concepts.
