Abstract
A high Visean to low Namurian age (S^ to E^) sedimentary sequence has been examined to establish its depositional history over a narrow arcuate, 32 km long, outcropping area in V/est Cumberland. The succession (209 - 502 m) is shown to be transitional between the massive holo-marine limestone sequences south of the Lake District and the Yoredale successions of Northern England- Palaeogeographic interpretation is limited by parallelism of the outcrop with the regional depositional strike, but most of the sedimentological changes observed may be attributed to the area's location south of the Northumbrian Trough and ascending the Manx-Cumbrian Ridge. Thirteen rather uniform, open marine shelf limestones in the sequence show the southerly influence of the Alternating with them in the lower part of the succession (S^ - D^) are subordinate shallow marine and subaerial mudstones, shales, argillaceous Ridge. and orthoquartzitic sandstones. These are of less importance towards the north-east, suggesting derivation from the Ridge, whose declining influence on sedimentation is attributed to its gradual submergence, A poorly developed rhythmicity affecting both limestones and elastics appears in the D^ subzone. The elastics now thicken towards a distant north-easterly source and assume a subaerial aspect with fluviatile and deltaic sedimentation pre- dominating. Some thicker units reach the south-west. The limestones show a more northerly dilation accompanying slightly increased water depth, against which the gradual north-easterly preponderance of elastics and of thin persistent coals are remniscent of typical Yoredale successions. development Evidence of thin supratidal sedimentation and subaerial erosion at the top of most limestones is attributed to the proximity of land. The regional pattern of sedimentation was governed by interaction between a subsiding depositional area, a continuous fine and coarse clastic supply and eustatic changes of sea level.
