Abstract
BACKGROUND: Research has increasingly explored the experiences of neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and Autistic people in different professions. Despite recent curiosity and discussion in relation to the medical field, there is a notable gap in a review regarding ADHD and/or Autism among doctors or medical students. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using three electronic databases (PsycInfo, Ovid MEDLINE, and CINAHL). Studies were selected based on inclusion criteria, including formal and informal diagnoses of ADHD and/or Autism among doctors and medical students. RESULTS: 67 relevant papers were identified. A range of findings were synthesised using Framework Analysis based on themes and study foci. This review highlights the strengths demonstrated by ADHD and/or Autistic doctors and medical students, reveals disparities in their psychological and physical well-being exacerbated by social and structural obstacles in the medical field. CONCLUSION: Recommendations for future practice and research are discussed, emphasising proactive measures to promote equality, equity, and inclusion.
