Abstract
This thesis explored the experiences of Overseas Students from Mainland China (OSMC) in British boarding schools. It used semi-structured interviews, reflective journal entries, questionnaires, photos, and several additional data collection methods to investigate the experiences of 16 OSMC across 12 British boarding schools, six of whom were spending their first academic year studying in the UK. The study’s methodology used the Lundy Model (2007) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN General Assembly, 1989) (CRC) to examine how these students' rights were respected or ignored in a boarding school setting. The findings indicate that OSMC can encounter many challenges relating to their studies, health, and capacity to adjust culturally and socially. It also found that OSMC have many approaches to navigate these challenges. When viewed through a CRC lens, both the challenges and approaches related closely to several articles of the CRC, such as the right to education (Article 28), the right to health and well-being (Article 24), and the right to be heard and participate (Article 12). The study also highlights the need for schools to facilitate the fulfilment of OSMC’s rights under the CRC and ensure that their rights are prioritised and not ignored. This thesis contributes to the field of international education by providing a study of OSMC in British boarding schools, a combination of subject and setting that has been unexplored in academic research. It also offers practical suggestions to professionals, such as teachers and education agents, on how to provide better support to OSMC. Additionally, the study contributes to the body of research involving children’s rights and has implications for the international education sector, particularly in areas related to boarding schools and OSMC.
