Abstract

This paper investigates the risks faced by investors due to limited digital transparency in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives within the built environment. It starts by recognising and describing the growing attention to financial greenwashing. The discussion then shifts to explore whether the absence of reliable, verified data at the building level creates obstacles for the advancement and accurate reporting of green finance in this sector. The analysis highlights how this lack of digital transparency generates systemic risks across the built environment's value chain, potentially hindering efforts to achieve sustainable financial practices and accountability.
