Abstract
This paper examines perceptions of the koine and its relationships with the epichoric dialects. The idea of a new, uniform common language which spread across the Greek world and replaced the dialects is rejected: in each area the koine emerged in a dynamic relationship with the local vernaculars. There must have been important differences in the development and status of the new Panhellenic standard across the Greek-speaking world. Greek sources often appear contradictory on the genesis of the koine: it is discussed as though it is both the descendant and the parent of the dialects. The confusion is typical of the culture of diglossia; but it may also mirror perceptions of the relation between the new panhellenic Greek identity and older local (e.g. Spartan or Athenian) identities.
