Abstract

We study social interactions effects among contemporaneous household members on informality, which here stands for the evasion of social security contributions. Using Mexican data, empirical findings suggest a positive correlation between informality among any two wage-or-salary household members for different model specifications. We use an estimable game of complete information to quantify the importance of social interactions effects in our context, and find that the likelihood of one household member working in the informal sector is almost 10% if another member of the same household does the same.
