Abstract

This paper explores changes to the nature of leadership in special schools in England that have taken place over the last decade. Previous investigations into the field had been limited as indicated in earlier work by the author (Male & Male, 2001). Since the publication of that paper, however, not only have substantial changes been recorded in regard to the student population of special schools (Male & Rayner, 2009), but also there have been significant changes to the expectations of leaders in those schools. The promotion of inclusive education in mainstream provision and changes to student population within special schools have developed new demands on headteachers and senior leaders in maintained special schools. This paper documents these changes and illustrates them through use of a case study.
